The Western Australian Government is seeking expressions of interest for the design and construction of a widened Karel Avenue bridge across Roe Highway in Perth as part of the Australian Government’s $2.3 billion Western Australia Infrastructure Package.
Western Australian Minister for Transport, Rita Saffioti, said the Karel Avenue Upgrade was one of seven congestion-busting road projects set to be built in Perth’s south from 2017 to 2020 that is expected to deliver 22km of additional freeway capacity.
As part of the upgrade, Main Roads will investigate widening Karel Avenue between Farrington Road and Berrigan Road to a four‑lane dual carriageway, and lengthening the existing Karel Avenue bridge across the freight rail line immediately to the south of Roe Highway, to facilitate construction of the Thornlie-to-Cockburn rail line as part of METRONET.
Federal Minister for Urban Infrastructure, Paul Fletcher, said the project formed a key pillar of the WA Infrastructure Package.
“This upgrade is one of many vital projects being funded under the Turnbull Government’s commitment to deliver almost $7 billion worth of infrastructure projects in Western Australia, and is yet another example of how the Turnbull Government is backing Western Australia and boosting the state economy,” Mr Fletcher said.
The Australian Government has committed $12 million to the $15 million project with the Western Australian Government contributing $3 million.
