The Federal and Queensland Governments have contributed more than $3 million in extra investment to improve safety on the Carnarvon Highway.

The unlocked funding will be used to widen a section of the highway between Injune and Rolleston.

The Federal Government contributed an additional $1.63 million under Round Six of the Heavy Vehicle Safety and Productivity Program towards these works.

The Queensland Government matched this commitment to jointly fund the upgrade project.

The funding will widen approximately 2.7km and extend five culverts. It is hoped that once completed, these works will ensure that the road is safer between Injune and Rolleston.

Minister for Infrastructure, Transport and Regional Development, Michael McCormack, said the works formed part of the Federal Government’s priority to improve safety and heavy vehicle productivity across the nation.

“Local residents, farmers, miners and producers who use the Carnarvon Highway will all benefit from these upgrades,” Mr McCormack said.

“It’s all part of the Federal Government’s record $100 billion investment in infrastructure projects getting Australians to where they need to be sooner and safer.”

Queensland Minister for Transport and Main Roads, Mark Bailey, said it was part of a $14.5 billion commitment by the state government to upgrade regional Queensland roads, supporting more than 13,500 jobs.

“This region generates more than $19 billion for our state’s economy every year,” Mr Bailey said.
