The Federal Government is investing $41.75 million into the jointly funded Thompsons Road Intersection upgrade in Clyde North.

The project will upgrade the intersection of Thompsons and Berwick-Cranbourne roads, replacing the existing roundabout with traffic lights and completing associated works to the bus bays and shared user pathways.

The upgrade is expected to increase capacity and improve traffic flow at the congested roundabout by installing additional through lanes and dedicated turning lanes.

It will also improve safety and enhance freight productivity by cutting time off the freight trips around Melbourne’s south-east.

The project will deliver new walking and cycling paths to improve connections through the area, along with upgrades to several bus stops near the intersection.

The Federal and Victorian governments are jointly funding the project, with the Victorian Government already committing its half.

Construction timeframes will be determined in consultation with the Victorian Government.

Federal Minister for Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development and Local Government, Catherine King, said, “We’re building Australia’s future, investing in Victoria’s road network to make it safer and more resilient.

“There are more than 110 active major projects across Victoria and the Federal Government is getting on with delivering all of them.”

Federal Member for Bruce, Julian Hill, said, “The Federal Labor Government is treating Victoria fairly, and fixing this terrible intersection is community priority. Numerous locals have raised it when I’ve been doorknocking in Cranbourne North so I’m pleased to champion funding to fix this.”

Federal Member for Holt, Cassandra Fernando, said, “I am pleased that after listening to frustrations from many in our community about the Thompsons and Berwick-Cranbourne Road roundabout, I have been able to successfully advocate for this crucial road upgrade.

“This $41.75 million investment by the Federal Government will ease one of our community’s worst bottlenecks, making daily commutes smoother and safer.

“This means less time on the roads and more time spent with your family.”

Victorian Minister for Transport Infrastructure, Gabrielle Williams, said, “We are glad to have a partner in Canberra with Federal Government that will help deliver projects that change the way people move across Victoria.”
