The final major construction works for the Western Port Highway Upgrade have commenced, with full closures of intersections to prevent delays and ensure works are completed on time.
The Western Port Highway Upgrade is on the road to completion as crews undertake the second – and final – major construction blitz for the project from 15 July.
There is a full closure at the Ballarto Road and Cranbourne-Frankston Road intersections at Western Port Highway, and the highway will also be closed between the two roundabouts.
Victorian Member for Cranbourne, Pauline Richards, said, “We’re upgrading key Western Port Highway intersections at Ballarto Road and Cranbourne-Frankston Road to improve safety and travel times for motorists in Melbourne’s southeast.
“We urge motorists to allow extra travel time as these important safety upgrades take place.”
During these works, crews will work around the clock to:
- Build new road pavement
- Remove concrete barriers
- Complete bulk earthworks
- Install stormwater and sub-soil drainage
- Install infrastructure for traffic signals and public lighting
- Carry out line marking
- Install street furniture including traffic barriers and road signs
The closures are expected to be in place until 5 September 2022.
By completing these works during a full closure, crews will be able to finish major construction and open the new signalised intersections earlier, saving months of additional closures and delays.
Once the road re-opens the upgraded signalised intersections will be ready for use. The project will continue to complete minor finishing works with some off-peak lane closures as needed until the end of 2022.
Victorian Member for Carrum, Sonya Kilkenny, said the Western Port Highway Upgrade is making solid progress as crews power toward completion later in 2022.
“We thank the community for their ongoing patience as works continue to open the new signalised intersections ahead of schedule,” Ms Kilkenny said.
Traffic travelling through the area will detour via Thompsons Road, South Gippsland Highway, and Baxter-Tooradin Road.
Local detours are in place via Hall Road and Pearcedale Road or Hall Road and McCormicks Road, Potts Road, and Centre Road. Signage is in place to advise motorists on live travel times on each route.
The Western Port Highway Upgrade will replace the roundabouts at the intersections of Ballarto Road and Cranbourne-Frankston Road with traffic lights to better manage traffic flow on and off Western Port Highway.
