The Victorian Government has released concept designs for a new rail bridge to replace the Mt Derrimut Road level crossing in Deer Park, which is set to be removed by 2024 – a year ahead of schedule.

Works will begin by the end of 2021 to build a new 2km rail bridge and brand new Deer Park Station, with concept designs available to view below.

Boom gates at Mt Derrimut Road can be down for extensive periods of time, causing significant traffic delays while multiple trains pass on the Geelong and Ballarat Lines. Around 23,000 vehicles per day pass through the crossing.

Since 2017, there have 15 boom gate collisions and 15 near misses at this level crossing.

Raising the train line is set to boost connectivity and safety for pedestrians and cyclists alike.

Removing the Mt Derrimut level crossing, along with two nearby crossings at Robinsons Road and Fitzgerald Road, will see the suburbs of Deer Park and Ardeer become level crossing free by 2024.

A modern new Deer Park Station will boast a new pedestrian connection linking suburbs north and south of the rail line, landscaped areas, more car parking and better bicycle facilities for commuters.

New access points to the south will be a key feature, linking the station to the more recently built residential areas in Derrimut and cutting down walking times for those arriving by foot.

Meanwhile, the Victorian Government has committed to the delivery of 150 upgraded car spaces at Deer Park Station as part of the Car Parks for Commuters program.

The Victorian Government will be seeking community feedback about how people move around the area and feedback on elements of the station precinct design.

Complete the feedback survey at Engage Victoria from Monday 19 April to Friday 7 May.
