The Victorian Budget 2018/19 includes $5 million to complete the planning and begin the delivery of the services and infrastructure to Fishermans Bend, Australia’s largest urban renewal project.

This includes public transport planning for a new connection between Fishermans Bend and the CBD.

The funding is on top of the $20 million already set aside for master planning and site preparatory works for The University of Melbourne to move its School of Engineering to the former GM Holden site, which will see more than 1000 new engineering and IT students and academics collaborate with industry leaders.

The project will also create homes for 80,000 residents and 80,000 jobs.

Minister for Industry and Employment, Ben Carroll, said, “We’re turning Fishermans Bend into a world-class engineering, design and manufacturing hub – fuelling job creation today and building the foundations for more growth for years to come.”

The draft Fishermans Bend Framework includes plans for four primary schools, a public secondary school and open space spanning three times the size of Docklands.

Victoria’s first vertical government school, South Melbourne Primary School, has already opened its doors to students.

The government is also investing $3.8 million for planning for the future Fishermans Bend Secondary School, giving local families certainty that they’ll have a great local school, close to home.
