The new $200 million Howard Smith Wharf Project in Brisbane is one step closer to reality as builders prepare restaurants and bars for fit-out this week.
Tourism Industry Development Minister Kate Jones said this week sees some significant changes taking place on the site.
“This key project will change the face of our city forever,” she said.
“Today is an exciting day as we mark the handover of restaurants and bars for fit-out this week.
“Already, this development has created around 200 new construction jobs for Queenslanders. Once it’s operational, Howard Smith Wharves will create another 800 jobs.”
Ms Jones said a new five-star hotel is a key feature of the project set to open in March 2019.
The luxury 164-room hotel is being developed by the Deague Group, creator of the renowned Art Series Hotels.
More than 80 per cent of the site has been allocated as public space, ensuring a playground for children and families to enjoy.
Howard Smith Wharves CEO Luke Fraser said more than $200 million will be invested to revitalise the river-city precinct.
“The river is the beating heart of Brisbane. We’re harnessing the natural beauty of Brisbane to create experiences that will lure visitors and give locals a new way to enjoy their city,” he said.
“This week marks a major milestone in delivery of the Howard Smith Wharves.
“Already you can start to see the site really taking shape but people will be surprised by what they see in the next few weeks as builders begin the fit-out of restaurants and bars on-site.”
