The Federal Government is continuing to invest in safety upgrades on local roads across New South Wales.
$38.8 million in funding has been committed for 90 upgrades under the 2024-25 Black Spot Program.
Safety improvements being funded under this latest round of works include roundabouts, traffic safety measures, upgraded lighting and safety barriers.
These 90 Black Spot projects are set to help reduce serious injuries and deaths on New South Wales roads.
The projects were recommended by the Black Spot Consultative Panel in New South Wales, which is comprised of local stakeholders and ensures projects meet the needs of local drivers.
As part of the Federal Government’s significant boost to road safety funding, Black Spot Program funding will increase from $110 million per year to $150 million per year nationally.
Federal Member for Gilmore and Chair of the New South Wales Black Spot Consultative Panel, Fiona Phillips, said she was pleased to announce this commitment to address 90 dangerous sites on local New South Wales roads.
“These sites have tragically seen 13 fatal crashes and over 400 crashes causing injury in the five years to 2022. These projects will target the hazards at these sites and save lives.
“I know there are more Black Spots across our state and I encourage anyone who knows of a dangerous site near them to consider nominating it for future funding rounds under this program.”
New South Wales Minister for Roads, John Graham, said, “Creating safer roads with safety infrastructure is critical to reducing road trauma, which will continue through ongoing collaboration with the Australian Government and local councils.
“The rising road toll is unacceptable, and this investment will deliver safer roads and safer journeys across New South Wales.”
New South Wales Minister for Regional Transport and Roads, Jenny Aitchison, said the upgrades will save lives and better protect regional communities.
“In regional New South Wales we have around a third of the state’s population but more than two-thirds of all road fatalities.
“I’m pleased to see so many Black Spot projects to improve road safety will be delivered in regional New South Wales.”
