The Federal Government will provide funding to revitalise the Flinders Island Airport under Round 2 of the Growing Regions Program.

The government will invest $2.68 million in the project, which is set to ensure the continuation of reliable air services to this regional community.

As the primary gateway for tourism and business, the airport plays a vital role for the island’s economy and community.

The project will improve the safety and capacity of the airport. Works will include construction of a new operations office that will house the airport’s electrical systems and other essential operational infrastructure.

Runway lighting and electrical infrastructure will also be brought into the 21st century, ensuring the airport can continue to facilitate night landings.

This will boost economic growth and tourism potential in the region by attracting more visitors and increasing business opportunities.

The project is being funded under Round 2 of the Growing Regions Program, which invests in priority community and economic infrastructure across regional, rural and remote Australia.

Federal Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development and Local Government Minister, Catherine King, said, “Quality infrastructure in regional areas is more important than ever. This much needed funding for Flinders Island Airport will ensure its long-term viability as a hub for the Furneaux Islands region.

“The project focuses on modernising Flinders Island Airport while embracing sustainability and enhancing liveability for the community here.

“By creating a more attractive and reliable travel gateway, the project is also expected to increase tourism and business opportunities for the Island and beyond.”

Senator for Tasmania, Helen Polley, said, “The infrastructure at Flinders Island Airport requires urgent upgrades – which is why I’m thrilled to announce the Albanese Government is delivering for the Flinders Island community.

“This project will make sure the airport can operate safely and efficiently, supporting freight on and off the island and most importantly supporting the Royal Flying Doctors Service (RFDS).”

Flinders Council Mayor, Rachel Summers, said, “This critical project’s benefits go far beyond financial returns, as is often the case for small, remote communities. The outcomes of this Airport Revitalisation will strengthen safety, well-being and social inclusion for our community, ensuring that the Furneaux Group of Islands continue to thrive and remain connected to the rest of Tasmania.

“The project will cement the continued operation of the Flinders Island Airport and support the region’s tourism, business, and emergency services. By successfully gaining funding through the Growing Regions fund we are able to commence stage one of the revitalisation project focusing on upgrading electrical systems and lighting; and constructing a new operations office.”
