Gladstone Ports Corporation (GPC) is now accepting applications for its 2023 apprenticeship program, with intakes opening on July 1 2022.
The highly sought-after program offers a variety of disciplines, including electrical, diesel fitting, plumbing, mechanical and horticulture.
GPC CEO, Craig Haymes, said GPC’s apprentice program is an important part of the Port’s identity.
“Our apprenticeships are one of our oldest programs and just in the past decade alone we’ve seen more than 200 apprentices come through our doors, earn their trades and learn from our experts,” Mr Haymes said.
“With one in four jobs in the region relying on trade we’re so proud to provide these apprenticeships every year and help skill our regional workforce for the future.”
GPC’s apprentice electrician, Abbey Downie, said the program was a rewarding and challenging experience.
“I love everything about my job, I love being on the tools, the support that I get from my supervisors and I love all the places and equipment that I get to work on,” Ms Downie said.
“GPC is such a huge worksite, apprentices are fortunate enough to be able to move around through all the different areas which means one day you might be working at the wharf, the next day you might be working at East Shores.”
GPC’s apprentice electrician, Liam Johnson, said he’s learnt a lot in the past year and a half.
“I chose GPC because it’s very community and family-orientated which aligns with my values, and GPC is also all about safety which is important to me,” Mr Johnson said.
“The tips I would give someone applying is to be confident, honest and know the role you’re applying for and don’t give up if you miss out.”
Each year GPC employs a number of new apprentices who demonstrate the ability to work safely in a heavy industrial environment, have the motivation to learn and develop new skills and work constructively within a team.
The apprentices will undertake a structured learning program, which includes a variety of training initiatives to enhance their skills and knowledge, improving their future and the future of the local community.
Applications open on 1 July and can be submitted through the GPC website here.
