Brunswick’s Sydney Road will receive safety upgrades to five intersections, thanks to the joint Victorian and Federal Government Road Safety Program.
Victorian Minister for Roads and Road Safety, Melissa Horne, said Sydney Road will be upgraded between Bell Street in Coburg and Park Street in Brunswick.
“We’re continuing to deliver upgrades along Sydney Road – one of the busiest corridors in Melbourne’s north – to improve safety for both drivers and pedestrians as they travel throughout the area,” Ms Horne said.
The works will take place at the intersections of Harding Street, Reynard Street, Moreland Street, Albert Street and Albion Street – and will see early-start signals installed at pedestrian crossings, as well as improved traffic lights.
Pedestrian safety signage including electronic ‘Give Way to Pedestrians’ signs will also be installed, along with new line markings, tactiles and pram ramps for better accessibility.
Member for Pascoe Vale, Anthony Cianflone, said, “This is all about boosting safety for all commuters, including drivers and pedestrians in the local area – and making it easier for them to get to where they need to go.”
Since 2015, the Victorian Government has delivered a range of safety improvements along Sydney Road to improve pedestrian and cyclist safety.
It includes a permanent 40km/h speed limit, electronic signage, dedicated green bike lanes and bicycle head-start boxes.
The works are scheduled for completion in March 2023.
