The long-awaited upgrade to Mandalong Road is progressing, with the release of key environmental documentation marking a major step forward for the $76 million regional infrastructure project.

Transport for NSW has published the review of environmental factors (REF), outlining proposed construction methods and environmental safeguards. The project will now enter the detailed design phase.

Backed by $56 million in federal funding and $20 million from the NSW Government, the upgrade is set to improve traffic flow and connectivity between the M1 Pacific Motorway, Morisset, and southern Lake Macquarie.

The preferred design – endorsed by 80 per cent of community respondents – includes new traffic signals at the Wyee Road and Freemans Drive intersection, a shared user path between Ourimbah Street and Gimberts Road, and additional bus stops along Dora Street.

Minister for Regional Transport and Roads Jenny Aitchison MP said the Minns Labor Government is committed to ensuring regional communities like Morisset have the infrastructure needed to thrive.

“We are building better communities for NSW ensuring we have the roads infrastructure we need to improve people’s daily lives,” Aitchison said.

“The Morisset community has been clear in their feedback, showing strong support for the proposal which includes much-needed upgrades, including traffic signals, active transport connections and new bus stops.”

Federal Member for Hunter Dan Repacholi MP said the region had long suffered from underinvestment.

“Morisset is growing rapidly, but for too long, the infrastructure investment didn’t match the needs of the local area.”

The Mandalong Road upgrade comes as the region experiences growing pressure from retail, industrial and commercial development. More information is available on Transport for NSW’s project website.
