The Victorian Government has announced works to remove the level crossing on Grange Road in Alphington in Melbourne’s north east will begin in 2017 with the lowering of the Hurstbridge line.
The project is part of the Government’s transformation of the Hurstbridge line, which will remove the dangerous Lower Plenty Road level crossing, rebuild Rosanna Station and duplicate the line from Heidelberg to Rosanna.
Member for Northcote Fiona Richardson the Hurstbridge line will be lowered under Grange Road, safely separating trains from traffic.
The announcement follows detailed planning, engineering and design work by technical experts, and extensive consultation with local residents and businesses.
The Grange Road level crossing is one of Melbourne’s worst, with boom gates down for a third of the morning peak, causing frustration, distress and delay.
“The Grange Road level crossing clogs streets, holds back our train system and puts lives at risk – and we’re getting rid of it forever,” Ms Richardson said.
“Next year work will start to lower the line so trains can safely run under Grange Road, reducing congestion, frustration and delay for thousands of motorists.”
Construction on the Hurstbridge line upgrade will begin in 2017 and is expected to be complete by 2019.
