Work is set to begin on an upgrade of the Castlereagh Highway intersection with Warren Road south of Coonamble, aimed at improving safety and traffic flow for motorists and freight operators.

The project follows community concerns raised by Coonamble Shire Council and local residents about traffic movements and safety at the intersection.

Transport for NSW Executive Director, Damien Pfeiffer, said the upgrade has been designed to create a safer and more efficient intersection for all road users.

“Transport has listened to the community feedback and developed a solution for the intersection that will boost safety and efficiency for all road users,” Pfeiffer said.

The upgrade will include a dedicated right-turn lane for southbound traffic travelling from the Castlereagh Highway into Warren Road, reducing the risk of crashes and improving turning movements for heavy vehicles.

The highway will also be widened to allow southbound traffic to safely pass vehicles waiting to turn, while crews will widen and repair an existing culvert on Warren Road and install upgraded warning signage.

Coonamble Shire Council will deliver the project on behalf of Transport for NSW.

Construction is scheduled to take place between 15 June and the end of August 2026, weather permitting.

Motorists are advised that changed traffic conditions, including single-lane closures, stop/slow traffic arrangements and reduced speed limits, may be in place during the works.
