Hobart Airport Interchange works underway

The Hobart Airport Interchange is underway, with concrete bridge girders for the overpass now installed.

The girders will support a poured concrete deck that provides two lanes of traffic in each direction. Installation of the girders is expected to be completed in early November and the interchange is on track for completion in 2022.

Liberal Senator for Tasmania, Jonno Duniam, said the Federal Government has invested over $37 million in the Hobart Airport Interchange and that it was pleased to see the installation of concrete bridge girders for the overpass.

“A total of 18 locally prefabricated girders, each 22m long, are being lifted into place, forming a key component of the 44m-long bridge that will lift the Tasman Highway clear of the intersections with Kennedy Drive and Holyman Avenue,” Mr Duniam said.

“The Hobart Airport Interchange project is part of the $349.5 million South East Traffic Solution, which is jointly funded by the Morrison and Gutwein Governments and will improve traffic flow and safety on the key transport corridor between Sorell and Hobart.”

Tasmanian Minister for Infrastructure and Transport, Michael Ferguson, said the project is being delivered by Tasmanian company Hazell Bros with the bridge girders supplied by another local company, VEC Civil Engineering.

“The Tasman Highway between Sorell and the city of Hobart is one of Tasmania’s most important transport corridors,” Mr Ferguson said.

“It is a major conduit for freight and an increasingly important commuter route between Hobart and the rapidly expanding residential areas of Sorell and the Southern Beaches.”

The interchange design features the lifting of the Tasman Highway over Kennedy Drive and Holyman Avenue, with on and off ramps serving the connecting roads.

Dual lane roundabouts underneath the highway will efficiently and safely control the intersections.
