An engineering firm has been awarded the contract for a major upgrade of Homebush Station in Sydney’s Inner West to improve accessibility, security and facilities.

Downer EDI Works will complete the contract as part of the New South Wales Government’s Transport Access Program.

Member for Drummoyne John Sidoti said the Transport Access Program is an initiative to encourage more people to use public transport by providing modern, safe and accessible infrastructure across the state.

“Customers at Homebush Station will benefit from a number of improvements. People who are less mobile, parents with prams and travellers with luggage will soon be able to access the platform directly with new lifts set to be installed,” Mr Sidoti said.

“There will be upgraded stairs, new accessible toilets and increased security through better lighting and CCTV surveillance. Outside of the station, customers will have a new ‘kiss and ride’ zone, storage for bicycles, new bus stops and shelters.

“The community will have a chance to provide feedback on the project, and help guide the final design, when the planning documents go on public display in the coming months.”

Since the Transport Access Program was launched in April 2012, more than 450 projects have been completed or are underway across NSW.

Construction has already commenced at Flemington Station to build new lifts, stairs and accessible toilets. There will also be a new entrance on the The Crescent, a pedestrian bridge to Sydney Markets and upgrades to lighting and CCTV.
