Construction on a $332,000 project to improve safety on the Hume Highway at Coolac in New South Wales is set to begin in October 2016.
A Roads and Maritime Services spokesperson said the project is being funded through the Australian Government’s Black Spot Program which aims to reduce crashes on Australian roads.
“Roads and Maritime will deliver the work on the Hume Highway east of Tabers Lane at Coolac to improve safety for road users and reduce the risk of crashes,” the spokesperson said.
“In the five years to June 2014 there were seven crashes along the stretch of highway where the work will be carried out, including one which resulted in a fatality and six which resulted in injuries.
“Crashes along this stretch of the highway often involve motorists veering off the road and crashing into objects.”
The spokesperson said edge and centre lines which make a noise when tyres make contact with the lines will be installed along a 2.5km section of the highway to alert drivers if they have left the travel lane.
“Around 300m of wire rope safety barrier will also be installed, connecting to existing barrier, to reduce the severity of crashes if motorists lose control and veer off the road.”
