The Victorian Government has fully opened the Hyland Highway near Carrajung Lower after completing major repairs and safety upgrades.
The busy Gippsland freight and tourism route was damaged by extreme weather in November and December 2023, with heavy rainfall causing two landslips.
Both lanes of the highway are now open, and the 100km/h speed limit has been reinstated.
Extensive works included the construction of a 50m-long retaining wall with increased load-bearing capacity to stabilise the road.
Crews also carried out asphalting and road surface repairs, restored damaged structures and road shoulders, cleared roadside drains and culverts, and replaced safety barriers, signage, and roadside assets.
Victorian Minister for Roads and Road Safety, Melissa Horne, said, “Both lanes of the Hyland Highway are now open and the 100 km/h speed limit reinstated – keeping this crucial freight and tourist route moving.
“It’s been a mammoth job from our crews to reopen both lanes after heavy rainfall and extreme weather caused two landslips – with crews stabilising and repairing the road to make it safe again for the community.”
Member for Eastern Victoria, Tom McIntosh, said, “The reopening of the Hyland Highway is a huge win for the community, freight operators, and tourists who rely on this key route each and every day.”
