Bombala’s iconic Coolumbooka River Bridge in New South Wales will continue to see essential repairs, including the installation of steel supports to strengthen the bridge.
“The next round of repairs on this 127 year old bridge will begin later this month to ensure the bridge provides connections for the local community well into the future,” Member for Monaro John Barilaro said.
“Recent investigations showed signs of deterioration on underwater sections and the bridge trusses, which is why this maintenance work is essential to retain the structural integrity of the historically significant structure.”
Mr Barilaro said the single lane, six-span bridge was completed in 1892 and is one of only seven remaining McDonald timber truss road bridges in NSW and has a load limit of 42.5 tonnes.
“Even 127 years later, this bridge plays an important part in connecting residents and the farming community at Bombala to the coast,” Mr Barilaro said.
Repair work will be carried out from 25 November to 13 December.
Work will then resume in early 2020 and will involve installing an additional bridge support system and replacing of some parts of the timber truss which have deteriorated.
