The New South Wales Government has opened expressions of interest (EOIs) from businesses looking to establish or expand manufacturing facilities for prefabricated building components and modular housing.
The initiative forms part of the Modern Methods of Construction Industry Expansion Program (MMCIEP), which aims to boost the use of modern construction techniques to accelerate housing delivery across the state.
The government is seeking proposals from businesses with expertise in advanced manufacturing, prefabrication and modular construction, with a focus on higher-density housing and designs from the state’s mid-rise pattern book.
Support available through the program may include financial assistance, access to suitable land, government purchasing agreements and other measures that help establish a sustainable modern construction industry in New South Wales.
The EOI is the first stage of a two-stage procurement process, with proposals to be assessed on commercial readiness, capability and capacity to deliver at scale.
The announcement follows the launch of the Housing Innovation in Construction Fund and Housing Innovation Network Grants Program, alongside a $1.6 million investment to establish a regulatory framework and certification system for modern methods of construction in New South Wales.
New South Wales Minister for Planning and Public Spaces, Paul Scully, said the initiative was designed to attract leading manufacturers to the state.
“This is a call to action for the world’s best manufacturers. If you have the expertise to build faster, smarter and at scale, we want you to help us build homes in New South Wales,” Scully said.
“Modern methods of construction will help us deliver more high-quality homes while reducing waste, lifting productivity and growing local manufacturing.”
New South Wales Minister for Housing, Rose Jackson, said modern construction techniques would play an increasing role in addressing housing supply.
“Every family deserves a safe and secure home, and this will help us build more homes sooner while supporting innovation across the housing sector,” Jackson said.
Executive Chair of prefabAUS, Damien Crough, welcomed the initiative.
“By supporting manufacturers to invest, innovate and scale production, New South Wales is creating the conditions to deliver more homes faster, while building sovereign capability, creating skilled jobs and positioning the state as Australia’s leader in industrialised construction,” Crough said.
