First Nations students from the Clontarf Foundation have explored career opportunities across the Riverina at a dedicated employment forum in Albury.
Sixty Year 11 and 12 students from eight Riverina Clontarf academies met with employers at the Albury Commercial Club to learn more about career pathways in industries including infrastructure, rail, construction, manufacturing and government.
Eighteen organisations attended the forum, giving students the opportunity to learn about the skills, qualifications and employment opportunities available across the region.
Supporting the Clontarf Riverina Employment Forum forms part of Inland Rail’s commitment to developing local workforces and creating opportunities for communities along the rail corridor.
Since July 2023, more than 1,700 people have worked on the Inland Rail program between Albury and Illabo, and Stockinbingal and Parkes, including 485 local residents, 170 First Nations employees and 126 women. During the same period, Inland Rail has spent $32.8 million with 216 local businesses.
An Inland Rail spokesperson said the event helped connect young people with local employers and career opportunities.
“Events like this are about creating real connections between young people and employers, helping students see the pathways available to them right here in their region,” the spokesperson said.
“The format encouraged open, honest conversations and gave students direct access to industry professionals who could share practical advice and insights.
“We’re proud to support initiatives that create awareness and opportunities for First Nations students, while also strengthening local workforce opportunities.”
Clontarf Foundation Employment Officer, Mitchell Fennessy, said the forum gave students valuable exposure to future career options.
“This forum brings our students face-to-face with employers and gives them a better understanding of what’s possible once they finish school,” Fennessy said.
“The boys get to ask questions, make connections and start thinking seriously about their next steps.
“It’s a great starting point for building relationships that can lead to work experience, site visits and, ultimately, employment opportunities in the future.”
