The Green Street bridge in Wangaratta has reopened to traffic after the previous structure was replaced to make way for double-stacked freight trains.
Inland Rail construction partners McConnell Dowell removed the traffic barriers to allow the flow traffic and pedestrians over the rail line for the first time since January 2024.
Inland Rail needed to replace the bridge and lower the railway tracks to create the required clearances for the safe passage of double-stacked freight trains. The tracks were realigned and lowered by 2.8m, and the central pier of the old bridge was removed, and the new bridge built in the same location.
The connecting pedestrian pathway to Roy St East will remain closed for further work early next year.
The bridge structure is made up of two 50-tonne main girders, fifteen 3-tonne cross girders and 50 concrete transfloor sections, and was assembled onsite and lifted into place in September.
Inland Rail Delivery Director Beveridge to Albury, Ed Walker, said, “The opening of the Green Street bridge is another step forward for the Inland Rail project.

“We’ve had great support from the local council, businesses and residents.
“We look forward to finishing the rest of the railway station precinct next year.”
