ITS Australia has highlighted the role of intelligent transport technology in improving road safety outcomes as part of National Road Safety Week.
Held from 17-24 May, National Road Safety Week aims to raise awareness of road trauma and encourage safer behaviour across Australia’s transport network.
ITS Australia said its members continue to play a significant role in developing technologies and transport systems designed to reduce crashes, improve incident response and create safer roads for all users.
ITS Australia Chief Executive Officer, Susan Harris, said the intelligent transport sector was helping transform how transport networks are planned, managed and operated.
“National Road Safety Week is an important opportunity to recognise the organisations and individuals working every day to reduce road trauma and improve safety outcomes,” Harris said.
“Many of our members are leading the development of technologies that help prevent crashes before they occur, improve emergency response times and provide transport operators with better real-time information.”
Harris said intelligent transport systems were becoming increasingly important in improving road safety outcomes across Australia.
Technologies and initiatives highlighted by ITS Australia include:
- Advanced traffic modelling and simulation tools to identify high-risk locations and improve network design
- Smart intersections, adaptive traffic signals and connected vehicle systems to reduce conflicts between vehicles, cyclists and pedestrians
- Traffic enforcement and motorway management systems to improve driver behaviour and traffic flow
- Fatigue and distraction detection technologies, telematics and behavioural analytics for fleet and heavy vehicle safety
- Real-time motorway management and incident response platforms
- Connected and automated vehicle research programs
- Road weather intelligence and network monitoring systems to support safer operational decisions
Harris said collaboration between government and industry remained critical to improving transport safety outcomes.
“Safer roads are the result of strong and sustained collaboration between government and industry,” she said.
“By working together and combining innovation, leadership and technical expertise, the sector is helping deliver smarter and safer transport systems for Australian communities.”
National Road Safety Week also encourages Australians to remember those who have lost their lives on the road and recommit to safer behaviour behind the wheel.
