Major Road Projects Victoria has announced works are set to commence on the Ison Road Extension at Werribee, set to provide the growing Wyndham region with a new link to the Princes Freeway.
With construction set to begin from early 2025, the extension will connect with the Ison Road Overpass, currently under construction.
Drivers will be able to use the new link by the of end 2026.
The extension project will build a 1.3km, four-lane road between the overpass and the Geelong Road freeway interchange at Werribee.
The new link will help enhance connectivity, improve safety and reduce congestion, particularly in central Werribee.
Once complete, the new road will cater for over 29,000 daily journeys by 2036 to help meet Wyndham West’s growing transport needs.
The link will also include walking and cycling paths to Geelong Road, boosting local active transport opportunities.
Major Road Projects Victoria has been working with Wyndham City Council on the pre-construction phase of the extension project. MRPV will deliver the project on behalf of the council.
The council is funding the Ison Road Extension with a $60 million contribution from the Victorian Government’s Growth Area Infrastructure Contribution (GAIC) fund. The council will also contribute an additional $20 million.
Work on the overpass, which extends over the Melbourne-Geelong railway line, is powering ahead, with crews recently installing bridge beams in the project’s latest construction milestone.
These upgrades will allow the dangerous and congested level crossing at Galvin Road, Werribee, only 600m away, to be closed to traffic once the new connection opens. This work will be delivered by the Level Crossing Removal Project.
Member for Werribee, Tim Pallas, said, “I’m pleased that work will soon begin on the Ison Road Extension, which will be critical to meeting the transport needs of our growing community.
“The extension will connect with the Ison Road Overpass, currently under construction, to provide Wyndham West with a vital direct link to the Princes Freeway between Melbourne and Geelong.”
Major Road Projects Victoria Program Director, Tim Price, said, “We look forward to starting construction of the Ison Road Extension to connect with the Ison Road Overpass.”
Wyndham City Council CEO Stephen Wall, said, “This is a critical road link that will benefit tens of thousands of residents in Australia’s fastest growing region. We thank the Victorian Government for their investment in the Ison Road connection and look forward to continuing to partner to deliver infrastructure to build a City our residents are proud to call home.”
