A landmark industry initiative is driving diversity and growth in the infrastructure sector by providing career opportunities to engineers of refugee or asylum seeker backgrounds.
The Engineering Pathways Industry Cadetship (EPIC) recruits qualified engineers from refugee or asylum seeker backgrounds.
The program removes barriers to paid employment and helps recruits start a career in major transport infrastructure projects. It also creates a talent pipeline for our industry.
EPIC is an initiative of Training for the Future (TFTF), a rail industry skills program to prepare Australians to deliver an unprecedented amount of work on the Melbourne rail network over the next ten years and beyond.
The cadetship aims to help solve the industry’s growing need for site engineers.
More than 70 shortlisted candidates were interviewed and assessed for 30 positions in the program. Overall, 13 industry partners conducted 220 interviews in just over three days. The partners involved are:

- North East Link Project
- V/Line
- Metro Trains Melbourne
- Lendlease
- CPB Contractors
- McConnell Dowell
- Laing O’Rourke
- Fulton Hogan
- Infrastructure Advisory Group
- John Holland
- Australian Rail Track Corporation
Successful candidates will be offered an 18-month cadetship with TFTF partners and industry.
They will receive on-the-job learning, support and mentoring and will also complete an accredited Graduate Certificate in Infrastructure Engineering qualification.
