A $1 million program of road resealing projects is being undertaken in the City of Launceston before the end of April 2017.

The program comprises a mix of spray sealing and bituminous concrete sealing, designed to prolong the life of roads by up to 30 years.

More than a dozen roads will be re-sealed around the municipality as part of the program.

They include:

  • Los Angeles Road, Windermere
  • Windermere Road, Windermere
  • Henry Street, Launceston
  • Punchbowl Road, Norwood
  • Richards Avenue, Newstead
  • Oakden Road, Prospect
  • Beech Road, Norwood
  • Cimitiere Street, Launceston
  • University Way, Newnham

Spray sealing is a fast and economical way to seal a roadway. It involves the application of hot liquid bituminous binder on to the road surface which is covered in one or two layers of aggregate. Within a few hours, it can be driven on.

Bituminous concrete, or asphalt, is typically a mixture of bitumen binder and varying sizes of aggregate. Asphalt is manufactured in a controlled condition at an asphalt batching plant. It is delivered by truck and placed on the road by an asphalt paver.

The City of Launceston’s Acting Director of Infrastructure Services Shane Eberhardt said a mix of the two sealing methods would be used in the Launceston municipality.

“These resurfacing works will prolong the life of these roads by somewhere between 15 and 30 years,” Mr Eberhardt said.

“It’s important preventative maintenance works that we need to undertake to ensure our road network remains in good operational order, and is part of more than $14 million worth of road upgrade and improvement projects undertaken by the City of Launceston in the past three years.

“What we would like to ask motorists is to please be patient as we undertake these works around the municipality, please pay attention to roadwork speed reductions and signage, and to please take extra care in areas where roadworks are being undertaken.”
