An upgrade of Leura Station in New South Wales’ Blue Mountains, is due to begin in January 2017 after the design was completed with consultation from the community.

A Transport for NSW spokesperson said, “This is a unique location and in line with the feedback from the community, we have taken care to ensure that design for the station upgrade maintains the heritage look and feel that characterises Leura.

“The detailed design has been developed by architects with experience working with heritage buildings and areas, while the community feedback has helped to guide the design.”

The upgrade of Leura Station includes a lift and accessible ramp to assist less mobile customers, including those with disabilities, parents with prams and travellers with luggage to access public transport.

“Improvements to the design include relocation of the new ‘Kiss and Ride’ area to the front of the taxi rank on Railway Parade, and an accessible path from this area to the station.

“The awnings around the station will reflect the heritage verandahs around Leura Mall and the canopies have been designed to provide protection from the elements while allowing in as much natural light as possible.

“New facilities will also include bicycle racks and signage, and we will be improving lighting and CCTV surveillance for increased safety.”

The work site for the upgrade of Leura Station will be established early in January 2017 with construction due to start shortly after and last for approximately 14 months.

The upgrade at Leura Station is being delivered as part of the NSW Government’s Transport Access Program which is an initiative to provide safe and accessible public transport infrastructure across NSW.

More than 450 projects have been completed or are currently underway since the program was launched in April 2012.
