A major upgrade to the Pioneer River Levee system is set to improve flood protection for homes, businesses and critical infrastructure in Mackay, following the award of a construction contract for the project.
The project is being jointly funded by the Federal Government, Mackay Regional Council and the Disaster Ready Fund, with a total investment of more than $19 million.
Works will include construction of a new levee wall, stormwater upgrades, road reconstruction and revegetation works, while the existing levee will be extended along the southern bank of the Pioneer River adjacent to West Mackay.
Flood gates will also be installed at key access points to allow the system to be activated when flooding is imminent.
Local contractor Pentacon has been awarded the construction contract, with works expected to begin in June 2026 and be completed by December 2026, weather permitting.
The project will be delivered in stages to minimise impacts on residents and businesses, with property access maintained throughout construction.
Federal Minister for Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development and Local Government, Catherine King, said the project would help protect the Mackay community from future flood events.
“Flooding has a devastating impact on homes and businesses, and this extension will provide protection for the Mackay community,” King said.
“We’re working with councils like Mackay to fund projects that strengthen our regional towns and help them bounce back quicker in hard times.”
Federal Assistant Minister for Northern Australia and Senator for Queensland, Nita Green, said the project demonstrated the value of collaboration between different levels of government.
“Using savvy design and local contractors, these upgrades will provide peace of mind for the community, offering vital property protection during floods,” Green said.
“This is the result of good collaboration between council and the Australian Government, listening to what northern Australians need to improve their lives.”
Mackay Regional Council Mayor, Greg Williamson, said the project would strengthen the region’s long-term resilience to flooding.
“This levee extension is an important step in strengthening Mackay’s flood resilience and safeguarding homes, businesses and key infrastructure, especially for the urban area south of the Pioneer River,” Williamson said.
“We know how significant flood events can be for our region and this project will provide greater peace of mind for residents by reducing risk and improving community resilience.
“Council is committed to delivering infrastructure that not only protects our community from future flood events but also enhances the liveability of our city through thoughtful design and landscaping.”
