The Victorian Government is moving ahead with site investigations for the Newport level crossing removal project at Maddox and Champion roads.
As part of the project, new rail bridges will be built over Maddox Road and closing Campion Road at the rail line, improving safety and creating more reliable travel times.
Akuna Drive is also being extended to connect Champion Road to Maddox Road. This new road will open before Champion Road is closed in 2026. The Victorian Government will also build a new pedestrian and cycling bridge over the rail line at Champion Road.
Site investigations will help prepare for relocation of utilities, site establishment and construction this year.
In January, works include collecting soil samples using a drilling rig, a small excavator and non-destructive digging.
As works progress, there will be an increase in crews, construction vehicles and trucks, temporary safety fencing installed around our work areas, intermittent reduced speeds, lane closures and pedestrian detours. Traffic management will be in place to help the delivery of materials and guide drivers and pedestrians safely through the area.
