New light rail tracks will soon be laid over Sydney’s King Street and George Street intersection in Sydney’s CBD. The intersection with completely close in what is a major turning point for the CBD and South East Light Rail construction on George Street.

Roads Minister and Acting Minister for Transport and Infrastructure Melinda Pavey said the time has come to focus on the intersections.

“So far we have focused on block closures for construction, keeping intersections open for traffic flow, but now with more than 8.5km of track laid across the route, it’s time to get into the intersections,” Ms Pavey said.

“This is the first full closure for one of the CBD’s busiest intersection, and our plan is to get in and get out by Monday morning to minimise disruption for retailers, pedestrians and motorists.

“The progress of the project on George Street over the last six months has been phenomenal and we are thanking all of those who live and work in the area for their patience as we gradually finish up and start to pull back the barriers.”

Transport Coordinator General Marg Prendergast said the works at the intersection will mean general traffic will not be able to access the area however local access will be maintained to the area at all times via alternative routes.

“We are advising motorists that during this period of construction, access to King Street between Clarence and Pitt will be restricted and alternative routes across the city should be used,” Ms Prendergast said

“Motorists who are travelling to the city via the Anzac Bridge should use the City Centre exit to Bathurst Street, while those travelling to the East of the city from the north should use the Cahill Expressway or Grosvenor and Bridge Streets.

Drivers are also being warned that special event clearways will be in place on Clarence, Kent, Sussex, Bathurst, Margaret and Jamison Streets and any vehicle parked in these clearways will be towed with fines being applied.

“We don’t want people to get caught out when parking in this area, so we’re reminding everyone to check twice for special clearway signs in the area before they park and not park in any of these special clearways.”
