The Queensland Government’s Lindum Level Crossing Precinct upgrade has completed preliminary planning, with work underway on short-term safety upgrades as well as a preliminary business case to investigate a long-term grade separation of the crossing.
Federal Minister for Communications, Urban Infrastructure, Cities and the Arts, the Hon Paul Fletcher MP, said the project was being funded under the Federal Government’s $4.8 billion Urban Congestion Fund, to reduce congestion in urban areas.
“Under the Urban Congestion Fund, we are delivering 177 individual packages of works nationwide. There are 65 Urban Congestion Fund projects around Australia that are completed or under construction, and a further 52 are expected to start construction by the end of year,” Mr Fletcher said.
Queensland Minister for Transport and Main Roads, the Hon Mark Bailey MP, said the next stage in planning follows community feedback received through the first stage of the Lindum Station Precinct Study.
“Lindum Station and its surrounds are a crucial part of the local community and this was reflected in the nearly 7,000 website views, almost 300 completed surveys and 180 ideas shared on the online digital interactive wall,” Mr Bailey said.
“The Queensland Government has committed $40 million to the Lindum Train Station upgrade, which will enhance safety and accessibility for commuters.
“Our upgrade plan, which is currently being developed, includes an improved pedestrian overpass with lift access linking platforms, as well as upgrades to the park ‘n’ ride facility.
“This will improve safety for pedestrians, bike riders and commuters, and will bolster overall connectivity within the precinct.”
Mr Fletcher said that the funding also supports upgrades to the urban road network, reducing congestion by addressing local bottlenecks.
“The Morrison Government has committed $85.4 million to this project to deliver an upgraded transport hub that safely caters for commuters, school children, business, bike riders and pedestrians,” Mr Fletcher said.
“We are continuing to work with all levels of government to progress the preliminary business case for the long-term upgrades that will address essential safety, efficiency and accessibility issues within the Lindum Level Crossing precinct.”
Brisbane City Council Lord Mayor, Cr Adrian Schrinner, said Council had already commenced work on immediate upgrades for the level crossing intersection on Kianawah Road, including signalisation and intersection reconfiguration.
“It is important that we immediately start improving the safety and efficiency at the existing intersections surrounding the crossing while the preliminary business case is being undertaken, which is why we have committed $40 million to the Lindum Level Crossing Precinct project,” Mr Schrinner said.
“We’re looking forward to working together with the Australian and Queensland governments to implement long-term safety solutions for this precinct.”
