The new Sydney M4 and M8 motorway link, between Western Sydney and Sydney Airport, will open to motorists two months ahead of schedule.
The 7.5km mega tunnels provide a critical new link between the M4 at Haberfield and the M8 at St Peters and will open January 2023.
New South Wales Premier, Dominic Perrottet, said, “Our strong, long-term economic plan has delivered a road project that will completely transform Western Sydney, helping people get home sooner and safer.
“This vital new link will save motorists up to 40 minutes on their journey between Western Sydney and Sydney Airport, bypassing 52 sets of traffic lights by travelling through 22km of tunnels deep under the city.
“We are completely transforming the way Sydneysiders live, work and commute across their city, with over a quarter of a million motorists already using WestConnex every day.”
The M4 and M8 link is the third stage of the $16.8 billion WestConnex project being delivered in a partnership between the New South Wales Government and the Commonwealth which has contributed a $1.5 billion grant and a $2 billion concessional loan.
Federal Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development and Local Government Minister, Catherine King, said, “The Australian Government is committed to a partnership which delivers vital infrastructure for our states and territories, including New South Wales, to enhance the liveability of cities like Sydney, and support the strength of its economy.
“These tunnels have been constructed using more sustainable materials and energy- efficient technology, requiring less long-term maintenance.
“The project has also achieved key sustainability ratings, with around 8.7 million tonnes of spoil beneficially reused, including at the future Western Sydney International Airport site.
“More than 18 hectares of green space is also being delivered as part of the WestConnex project, along with 23km of new and improved cycleways and walkways.”
New South Wales Minister for Metropolitan Roads, Natalie Ward, said, “More than 12,000 people have been involved in building the project with around 40 per cent of workers from Western Sydney and 21 per cent female, which is well above the national industry average.”
“This marks a major milestone for the city shaping Westconnex project which is on track to be completed this year when the Rozelle interchange comes online.
“The New South Wales Government plans don’t stop here and we are already working to link in the future Western Harbour Tunnel and Sydney Gateway in a win for everyone from tradies to tourists.”
The final stage of WestConnex will be complete once the Rozelle Interchange opens in late 2023.
