The New South Wales Government has announced a $60 million funding boost for priority bus and road infrastructure in Macquarie Park in Sydney to increase public transport reliability and upgrade pedestrian safety.
Road and intersection upgrades will include building bus lanes, turning lanes, and traffic lights to replace congested roundabouts.
Minister for Transport and Infrastructure, Andrew Constance, released plans to make major improvements to roads to support growth in Macquarie Park with road capacity upgrades for public transport as well as general traffic.
“Macquarie Park is the second largest business district in the state – it is home to Macquarie University, Macquarie Shopping Centre and many ASX-listed companies – and it is only going to get bigger,” Mr Constance said.
“There is already $2.7 billion in development applications for the precinct, with plenty more in the pipeline.
“We need to keep up with demand, and improve the transport system for the tens of thousands of people who live, work and study in the area now as well as those who will commute here in the future.”
Coordinator General Marg Prendergast said a new Macquarie Park Access Plan to identify further transport improvements will be developed in collaboration with stakeholders and will involve community engagement.
“We’ll be working closely with community groups and local businesses to address congestion and improve access to and from this precinct, particularly in the lead up to the temporary closure of the Epping to Chatswood line in delivering Sydney Metro Northwest,” Ms Prendergast said.
“We’re doing a lot to improve transport in Macquarie Park so it’s critical that we have a coordinated approach across all projects to minimise impacts for businesses and other important stakeholders.”
Work on the bus infrastructure upgrade will be delivered in two stages from mid-2017 to support the temporary transport plan which will be in place through the construction of Sydney Metro Northwest.
