Hobart’s Macquarie Point Development Corporation Amendment Bill 2018 has passed the Legislative Council, paving the way for a Hobart City Deal.
This Bill allows for the reset of the Macquarie Point Master Plan in line with the MONA vision, where open space, arts and culture are at the heart of the site.
Under the new Master Plan, community space accounts for more than 50 per cent of the site, which will be available for events and festivals.
The new Master Plan also allows for a range of uses which will ensure the precinct is a vibrant cultural hub with 24/7 life on the site, not just during events.
The new planning framework will enable the development of the site, including a world-leading Antarctic and science precinct, while drawing from the MONA vision, to bring the site to life.
Once the new Master Plan receives approval, the Hobart City Council will be the Planning Authority for all development on the site.
Combined with the government’s commitment to remove the Macquarie Point Wastewater Treatment Plant, the new Master Plan signals an exciting future ahead for one of Hobart’s key precincts.
