Construction crews working on the Webster Street Level Crossing Removal Project have completed a major piling milestone, with 403 piles installed to support the walls of the new road underpass in Dandenong.
More than 38,000 tonnes of soil have already been excavated as part of the project, representing around two-thirds of the total excavation required for the underpass.
Works are continuing on the eastern side of the rail line, where crews are progressing excavation ahead of the next construction stages.
Once excavation is complete, the project team will construct the underpass base slab, apply waterproofing to the walls and floor, and install a drainage system designed to pump water into a detention basin before it flows into Dandenong Creek.
Architectural wall treatments inspired by Dandenong’s colours and character will then be installed, followed by road surfacing, line marking, lighting and safety barriers.
The new road connection between Princes Highway-Lonsdale Street and Cheltenham and Hammond roads is expected to open in spring, around two years ahead of schedule.
The Webster Street level crossing closed in October last year, removing boom gates from the Pakenham railway line and Cranbourne railway line.
The project has also delivered a new walking and cycling path along Webster Street, linking with the Dandenong Creek Trail and improving connections to shops and services in Dandenong’s CBD.
