Victoria’s Big Build continues to transform travel across Melbourne, with major upgrades advancing at Calder Park and in Greenvale.
At Calder Park, a new shared-use path alongside the Calder Park Drive road bridge is nearing completion.
Designed as an elevated switchback, the looping structure connects to the new bridge at a gentle gradient, improving accessibility for pedestrians and cyclists. The state says the structure’s bold colour scheme is inspired by the surrounding grasslands.
The complex build has required a series of temporary scaffolding systems, known as falsework, to support the suspended platforms. Installation of the eight large concrete planks was completed using a 400-tonne crane.
Once open later this year, the bridge will remove the need for a level crossing, boosting safety and easing traffic on the Sunbury Line corridor.
The project forms part of broader works to make the line boom gate free by 2025, aligning with the anticipated opening of the Metro Tunnel and its five new underground stations.
Meanwhile, Greenvale’s road network is seeing major improvements thanks to the Epping Road Upgrade.
A key milestone was achieved with the reopening of De Rossi Boulevard on 16 April, following vital enhancements at its intersection with Epping Road.
Works included the addition of new lanes, traffic signals, on-road bicycle lanes, walking paths, on-street parking, and upgraded street lighting and drainage.
Crews also completed substantial upgrades to Craigieburn Road East and Lehmanns Road intersections, reopening them on 14 April after a concentrated 24/7 construction blitz designed to minimise disruptions.
These upgrades involved the construction of new lanes and shared paths, as well as improved kerbs, medians, and traffic islands.
The intersection improvements are seen as critical steps towards the Epping Road Upgrade’s goal of delivering safer, smoother travel between Wollert and Epping.
The full project, being delivered by Major Road Projects Victoria in partnership with McConnell Dowell, is set to add lanes in each direction between Craigieburn Road East and Memorial Avenue.
When completed in late 2025, the upgrade should significantly improve daily journeys for the 35,000 drivers who use Epping Road, while also enhancing connections for pedestrians and cyclists.
