More than $40 million worth of major maintenance works have begun across north and north eastern Victoria to rehabilitate sections of regional roads, making them smoother, safer and resistant to further damage.

Victorian Minister for Roads and Road Safety, Luke Donnellan, announced the works that will take place across the two regions through to the end of 2017, and will be delivered by regional contractors including the North Eastern Maintenance Alliance.

A number of sites will receive major repairs and maintenance works including the Hume Highway, Goulburn Valley Highway, McIvor Highway, Kiewa Valley Highway, Midland Highway and key rural roads including Benambra-Corryong Road, Benalla-Yarrawonga Road and Bacchus Marsh-Gisborne Road.

“We’re working to make the roads people rely on everyday safer and more reliable – to ensure parents can take their kids to school safely, or get to work on time,” Mr Donnellan said.

“The North and North Eastern region is Victoria’s foodbowl, tourism playground and a key national freight hub, and these works will help to continue to drive these industries.”

Over 250km of road will also be resealed across the regions including sections of the Murray Valley Highway, Melba Highway, Borung Highway, Pyrenees Highway and Great Alpine.

Reducing the level of deterioration of road surfaces will provide a boost to local regional producers, making their journey to market or to the factory more reliable.

It will also help to ensure those visiting our regions can access local businesses and attractions safer and sooner, and support local tourism.

The road improvements will not only create smoother and safer roads for all motorists but will also preserve the longevity of the roads.
