The Federal Government has announced three new projects under its $1.2 billion Road Blitz program, with $38.5 million committed to planning upgrades at major intersections across Melbourne’s fast-growing outer suburbs.
In partnership with the Victorian Government, the promised funding would target notorious congestion points in Warrandyte South, Wantirna South and Croydon North – areas experiencing rapid population growth and mounting transport pressure.
The largest share of the funding – $25 million – will go toward planning and development works at the complex Five-Ways intersection in Warrandyte South, where Ringwood-Warrandyte Road, Croydon Road, Husseys Lane and Brumbys Road converge. The intersection sees 8000 vehicles daily and has recorded five crashes between 2020 and 2024.
In Wantirna South, $10 million will be used to plan upgrades at the High Street Road and Mowbray Drive intersection, including a proposed new signalised T-intersection to improve access, reduce travel times, and enhance pedestrian and cyclist safety.
A further $3.5 million has been allocated to develop a business case for improvements to the Maroondah Highway and Yarra Road intersection in Croydon North, a known congestion point particularly during school drop-off and pick-up times. Enhancing pedestrian accessibility – including on Kent Avenue – will be a focus of the planning.
“As Melbourne’s population continues to grow, we are investing in critical projects that will create better journeys for motorists,” said Victorian Minister for Transport Infrastructure Gabrielle Williams.
These works form part of the broader $1.2 billion Road Blitz package, with the Commonwealth contributing $1 billion in the 2025–26 Budget and the Victorian Government committing $200 million.
