The Grain Freight Road Improvement Program has been completed, with the final two projects rounding off 480km of improved roads in the Wheatbelt region.
The $118.3 million program launched in 2010 and involved improvements and maintenance to state and local government roads throughout the region.
The upgrades spanned 15 local government areas, from Nungarin in the north to Kulin in the east and Narrogin in the south. Works included:
- Widening narrow seal to eight metres minimum width (a standard of seven metres minimum width on local roads)
- The application of seals and reseals
- Intersection upgrades
- Geometry improvements/targeted realignments
The last project to be completed was a realignment at Cubbine and Wackett Curves by the Shire of Quairading.
Both these realignments involved eliminating almost 90 degree curves, improving safety for vehicles, trucks and school buses.
