Construction has begun on an upgrade that aims to ease congestion and improve road safety at a key intersection in the NSW town of Yoogali, near Griffith.
The $8.8 million project aims to enhance traffic flow at the intersection of four important roads in the town.
Works involve widening the intersection of Burley Griffin Way and Irrigation Way, an upgrade of the Burley Griffin Way rail crossing to install a new rail crossing and signals.
Burley Griffin Way will be closed for one week from 16 April 2020 while works are being carried out.
Following the road closures, intersection improvements will continue, including widening and upgrading approaches, building a new road surface and installing traffic lights.
In May 2020, a three-month closure of Irrigation Way will begin, so that a new bridge structure can be built on Irrigation Way over Main Drain J.
The project is expected to be completed by the end of 2020, weather permitting.
This $8.8 million project has been jointly funded, with the Australian Government committing $4.4 million and the NSW Government committing $4.4 million.
Federal Minister for Infrastructure, Transport and Regional Development Michael McCormack said behind-the-scenes preparation had been under way for a number of months on the project.
“A huge amount of planning, consulting and investigation work has taken place in the lead-up to this project which means the community will see the intersection upgrade taking shape quickly and easily,” Mr McCormack said.
Federal Member for Farrer, Sussan Ley, said the project demonstrated how the Federal and NSW Governments were listening to the community.
“Locals have raised concerns about safety and congestion through this important intersection. We have listened to them and acted quickly to ensure it is improved as soon as possible,” Ms Ley said.
“This project forms part of the Federal Government’s $100 billion pipeline of infrastructure projects which is critical during the current COVID-19 pandemic in creating jobs, boosting the economy and getting Australians home to their families sooner and safer.”
