The third runway for Melbourne Airport has entered into the next phase of development, with initial works to begin and community consultation underway for the Noise Amelioration Plan.

Early and preliminary works will commence this month, with changed traffic conditions on Sunbury Road expected from late September as part of upgrades to improve traffic flow and safety. These works are in preparation for construction of the runway and will include road widening and the installation of a temporary intersection and traffic lights at the north of the airport between the Wildwood Rd and Oaklands Rd roundabouts. These works are expected to take around 12 months to complete.

In parallel, targeted community engagement has begun with residents in the Hume and Brimbank local government areas for development of the Third Runway Noise Amelioration Plan. The plan will be designed to reduce the impacts of aircraft noise for residents and sensitive public buildings in the communities closest to the airport through building improvements such as roof insulation, double-glazed windows and upgraded seals. Updated noise forecasts in 2026 will determine eligibility for individual properties, however residents in the area are invited to provide input to help shape the project.

Melbourne Airport Third Runway Executive Director, Peter Lellyett, said that the early works and engagement mark a significant milestone for the project.

“The third runway is critical to keep Victoria connected, ensuring we can meet future demand for travel and support the state’s economy,” Lellyett said.

“We’re committed to working closely with our local communities to manage the impacts of the project, particularly when it comes to aircraft noise. Consultation for the Noise Amelioration Plan is a key step in making sure residents have access to information, can provide feedback and understand how we are planning for the future.

“The Sunbury Road changes are essential to keeping vehicles moving safely in and out of the airport when main construction works begin next year.”

The third runway is scheduled to open in 2031 and will support 37,000 additional jobs by 2046, boost tourism, provide choice for travellers and enable continued exports for Victorian producers.
