Melbourne to upgrade car parks at busiest stations

The Victorian Budget 2018/19 will provide $60 million for over 2000 new and upgraded car parking spaces to be built at key stations across Melbourne’s rail network.

Key stations to be upgraded include Belgrave, Sandown Park, Epping and Craigieburn with other stations to also be considered as part of the package, which is the biggest one-off boost to station car parking in Victorian history.

Car parking at Belgrave will be more than doubled with a new multi-deck car park to be built in the station precinct.

It will provide 470 new car parks for commuters – a significant increase to the 160 spaces currently available.

Victorian Premier, Daniel Andrews, said, “It’s frustrating to turn up at a station car park in the morning and find it already full – that’s why we’re building thousands of new car spaces to make it easier for people to get where they need to go.

“We’re making sure more people can get a park at their local train station and that stations are safe and easy to access.”

This will mean commuters will no longer clog up neighbouring streets with their cars and will free up more car parking in Belgrave’s town centre for local traders, shoppers and residents.

The station precinct will also be safer and easier to access with new lighting, CCTV, better parking and drop off points for coaches, and clearer signage.

Minister for Public Transport, Jacinta Allan, said, “We’ve already delivered more than 3000 new and upgraded car spaces at some of our busiest train stations – with 2000 more, we can make it even easier for more people to catch the train and help ease traffic on our busy roads.”
