The new Southland Station in Melbourne’s southern suburbs has opened to its first trains and passengers.

More than 350 people worked during the 15-month construction of the $21 million stop on the Frankston line, moving about 600 tonnes of earth.

A pedestrian underpass will lead from the nearby Westfield shopping centre to the station.

Melbourne’s newest train station will cater for more than 4,400 passengers per day, providing direct access to Southland shopping centre and cinemas.

In the past, passengers had to catch the bus or walk from Highett and Cheltenham stations.

The new station includes ramp and stair access to both platforms, accessible toilets, shelter and CCTV on both platforms, and bicycle hoops in the station precinct.

Key design elements of the station were shaped by consultation with the local community and construction of the new station has seen 600 tonnes of earth moved and over 60,000 hours worked.

Southland Station is the twelfth new station to be opened by the Victorian Government, with trains running every ten minutes during the day on the Frankston line.
