Computer glitch shuts down entire Melbourne rail network

Following a computer glitch that left Melbourne train passengers stranded for over two hours on Thursday 13 July, Metro Trains has promised to conduct a thorough investigation into the incident.

The incident occurred during afternoon peak hour and caused further delays throughout Melbourne’s entire transport network, with major roads and tram networks suffering extreme congestion as Melbournians tried to leave the CBD.

The entire Melbourne rail network was shut down due to a computer glitch at about 4pm on Thursday 13 July 2017.

Metro spokesman, Marcus Williams, advised that compensation will be dealt with on a case-by-case basis and urged anyone who was impacted by the delays to contact Metro to have their case looked at.

Passengers trapped on trains were told not to force the doors open, but video has surfaced on Twitter showing passengers jumping out of a carriage and onto the tracks. Crowd control measures were put in place in Southern Cross and all City Loop stations.

Services resumed shortly after 5.30pm, but by that time, platforms were clogged with  angry commuters who were confused by the chaos.

Public Transport Victoria’s customer help call centre went down during the breakdown, leaving many commuters frustrated.

Yarra Trams and Vic Roads also took to Twitter to advise commuters about delays caused by the train network breakdown.

The exact cause of the breakdown is still unknown but Metro Trains is planning a full investigation.
