METRONET has revealed the preferred proponent for the Midland station works in Perth, with works including decommissioning and demolishing the existing 53-year-old train station and constructing a new facility between Helena and Cale streets.
Midland Junction Alliance (McConnell Dowell Constructors, Georgiou Group, Arcadis Australia and BG&E) has been named the preferred proponent to deliver the project.
The project is jointly funded by the Federal and Western Australian governments, with the Federal Government committing $82.5 million.
The new station’s contemporary design will incorporate three platforms catering for up to six-cars, a publicly accessible pedestrian overpass connecting both sides of the railway, a bus interchange and cycling facilities.
Federal Member for Hasluck, Ken Wyatt, said, “This $82.5 million investment by our Government to replace the Midland Station will drive investment for our region, helping to create local jobs and supporting local businesses.
“Hasluck residents and businesses can look forward to welcoming an increase in tourism with the streamlined connection into Perth’s CBD.
“The train service from Midland to Perth is vital in ensuring our region is connected and accessible for both local residents and businesses.”
Federal Minister for Communications, Urban Infrastructure, Cities and the Arts Paul Fletcher, said, “METRONET will play a critical role in supporting the growth of Perth and is just one of the many major projects to receive funding from the Morrison Government as part of its record $110 billion, 10-year infrastructure investment pipeline, which is helping to drive Australia’s world-leading economic recovery.”
Once open, the new station is expected to have 3,300 daily boardings, growing to 3,700 in 2031, with the station boasting a 25-minute, two-zone journey to the Perth CBD.
Western Australian Transport Minister Rita Saffioti, said, “Replacing the Midland Station was a key McGowan Government election commitment and we have reached a key milestone in the project today by announcing the preferred proponent.
“Midland is an important retail, commercial and medical hub and this project will allow the station to continue playing a central role connecting visitors with these businesses and services.
“The new station will bring an economic, social and environmental boost to the Midland city centre, while supporting local jobs during construction.”
The Western Australian Government has nine METRONET projects currently under construction, with one completed and three in procurement.
East Perth also has a new METRONET Public Transport Operations Control Centre (PTOCC) underway, which is close to final contract negotiations.
The alliance contract for the Midland Station is expected to be awarded in late 2021.
