The $222 million Mickleham Road Upgrade, located in Melbourne, is utilising innovative technology – including the Australian-first ZWS Patriot, to improve sustainability and reduce its carbon footprint.
The ZWS Patriot system filters and re-uses waste from non-destructive digging, allowing for zero waste or landfill during construction.
The environmental benefits of this technology include a net carbon reduction of 88 per cent per load, reuse of water, fewer truck movements, and better tracking of waste.
The upgrade will involve building extra lanes in each direction on Mickleham Road between Somerton Road and Dellamore Boulevard, along with new traffic lights, intersection upgrades, and better walking and cycling connections.
The project is expected to create 420 new jobs, including 134 direct and 286 indirect jobs.
Solar technology is also being used to power the temporary traffic signals near Aitken College and the Somerton Road intersection, as well as the project’s main construction support site.
The upgrade is part of the Victorian Government’s record investment in the suburban road network in Melbourne’s north, with other major upgrades completed or underway on the North East Link Project, M80 Upgrade, Craigieburn Road Upgrade, O’Herns Road Upgrade, and Fitzsimons Lane Upgrade.
Stage 1 of the Mickleham Road Upgrade is expected to be completed in mid-2025, with a further $6.5 million allocated to the progress plan for a potential future upgrade of Mickleham Road between Dellamore Boulevard and Craigieburn Road.
