Mid West Ports Authority has completed a $13.6 million infrastructure upgrade of Berth 4 at Geraldton Port in Western Australia.
Western Australian Transport Minister, Bill Marmion, said the upgrade to the port’s Berth 4 facility was the biggest infrastructure investment by Mid West Ports since the construction of iron ore export facilities at Berth 5 in 2008.
“This project is essential for the continued economic well-being of this region as the upgraded infrastructure will continue to allow the port to provide an efficient export outlet for the Mid West for many years to come,” Mr Marmion said.
“Increasing overall productivity at this port will also benefit local businesses and producers who provide significant employment for locals.
“More than 65 jobs were generated during project construction with the majority of work being performed by local contractors Diab Engineering, GCo and S&K Electrical – that’s great news for the Mid-West community.”
Mr Marmion said the project team deserved congratulations for their successful completion of the infrastructure upgrade.
“This major project has not only been delivered on time and within budget but also with a great safety performance being demonstrated by all involved,” Mr Marmion said.
“I’m looking forward to the Geraldton Port continuing to provide benefits and employment in the Mid-West region well into the future.”
The Berth 4 shiploader and conveyor structures were first commissioned in the mid 1960s and loaded the first export consignment of iron ore from Western Australia.
The facility exports mineral sands, garnet, talc, copper and zinc concentrate.
The project involved 169 tonnes of fabricated structural steel and more than 22km of electrical cable installed during a seven-week planned shutdown.
