The Victorian Government has announced it will build the long-awaited Mordialloc Bypass aimed at reducing road congestion in the south east of the state.
The Victorian Budget 2017/18 will include $300 million to build the nine kilometre road between Springvale Road in Aspendale Gardens and the Dingley Bypass to slash congestion and improve safety in one of Melbourne’s fastest growing areas.
Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews said, “We’ll build the Mordialloc Bypass to slash congestion and create jobs in Melbourne’s south east.
“Whether it’s removing level crossings or building new roads – we’re not just talking about it, we’re getting on with the job.”
In this investment into Melbourne’s bayside suburbs, the bypass will be separated from the busy Springvale Road intersection through the construction of an overpass.
Traffic signals will be installed at other intersections to improve safety and traffic flow and a shared cycling and pedestrian path will be constructed along the full length of the bypass.
Minister for Roads Luke Donnellan said, “The south east is one of Melbourne’s fastest growing communities. The former government talked about it but we are building the Mordialloc Bypass which will help meet that growth, as well as reducing current congestion.”
Melbourne’s south east is growing rapidly and the increasing traffic is causing frustration, with congestion impacting the reliability of local buses and delaying drivers and freight vehicles.
Peak hour traffic turning on and off the Mornington Peninsula Freeway often results in queuing, causing bottlenecks and delays on surrounding roads.
VicRoads will consult with local councils, freight operators and bus companies to ensure the needs of the whole community are met, and the project is expected to be completed by 2021.
