The Victorian Budget 2018/19 will include $75 million to upgrade the Mordialloc Bypass to a four-lane freeway, removing a further three sets of traffic lights from the current design.
The $375 million project will create more than 400 jobs and cut 10-minutes off a trip between the Mornington Peninsula Freeway and the Dingley Bypass.
The freeway will connect the Mornington Peninsula Freeway at Springvale Road in Aspendale Gardens to the Dingley Bypass in Dingley Village, creating a continuous freeway from Frankston to Clayton.
The new freeway will have entry and exit ramp interchanges at Springvale Road, Governor Road, Lower Dandenong Road and Centre Dandenong Road.
A new interchange will also be built at Thames Promenade, making it easier for drivers to access the new freeway.
Victorian Premier, Daniel Andrews, said, “We’d all rather be home with friends and family than stuck in traffic – that’s why we’re getting things done in Melbourne’s south-east and building the Mordialloc Freeway.”
Building the road to a freeway standard will also take tens of thousands of vehicles off busy local roads, easing congestion on roads like the Nepean Highway, Boundary Road, Wells Road, Westall Road and Springvale Road.
The new freeway will also be safer for cyclists and pedestrians with a shared path to be built along the entire length so they’re separated from traffic.
Construction will start in 2019 and be completed by the end of 2021.
