The Victorian Government has begun major works in Melbourne’s west to remove four level crossings and build a new Melton Station.
Crews are now on the ground at all level crossing removal sites in Melton and Truganina.
Temporary fencing and barriers have been set up around the project area to keep workers safe – and works are continuing ahead of piling and major earthworks.
The project will deliver better journeys for passengers and motorists, with new rail bridges taking trains over Coburns and Exford roads and new road bridges over Ferris Road, Melton and Hopkins Road, Truganina – as well as the new accessible Melton Station.
The new Melton Station will feature four platforms to accommodate Ballarat train services and provide dedicated platforms for services that will begin and end at Melton. It is set to open in 2026 – two years ahead of schedule.
The Melton Line Upgrade will boost passenger capacity on the line by 50 per cent and support the introduction of longer nine-car VLocity trains – with the project set to be complete in 2028.
A new stabling yard will also be built at Cobblebank to house the new trains and early site investigations will soon get underway.
The Victorian Government is building 23 new VLocity trains in Dandenong to increase capacity in Melton – with six trains already operating on the network.
Across Melbourne, 110 level crossings are being removed by 2030, with 84 already gone for good.
Victorian Minister for Transport Infrastructure, Danny Pearson, said, “We are getting on with building a massive package of works across Melbourne’s west – cutting congestion for motorists and delivering better and more reliable transport connections for passengers.”
Member for Melton Steve McGhie, said, “Shovels are in the ground on the transformational level crossing removal project in Melton, which will help deliver improved public transport and better livability for Melton locals.”
